Catabolic House is a natural urban reclamation project in which an entire four bedroom house built in 1913 will be subsumed into an ecologically enhanced biological composting system — thereby reverting the artifice of the Great American Suburban Dream back to pastoral prairie land, where bison once roamed.
An investigation of natural remediation systems, Catabolic House is a biological machine research experiment incorporating the design and implementation of an ecological growth system that reclaims a house as fast as possible by a managed process of organic oxidation. It is an experiment in reclamation design and eco-engineering, breaking down the model of post-industrial suburban growth into a simpler and more robust organic machine system governed by a theory of naturally enhanced entropy, collapse and regrowth.
